Breast Augmentation Surgery

Breast Augmentation surgery is a cosmetic procedure designed to increase the volume and size of your breasts. It commonly involves insertion of breast implants or transfer of fat to achieve this.

Is Breast Augmentation Surgery Right For Me?

Breast augmentation can be achieved through two primary methods: breast implants and fat transfer. Breast implants involve surgically placing saline or silicone implants to enhance breast size and shape. On the other hand, fat transfer involves liposuction to remove excess fat from another area of the body, which is then purified and injected into the breasts for augmentation. The choice between these methods depends on your unique goals and preferences, which we’ll explore during your consultation.

Am I the Ideal candidate?

The ideal candidate for breast augmentation is someone who seeks to augment the size and volume of their breasts. During your consultation, we will assess your unique needs and concerns, and discuss whether breast augmentation is the right procedure for you.

After Breast Surgery

Following breast augmentation, your recovery timeline will vary based on the extent of the procedure and your body’s response. Typically, expect a two-week healing period for surgeries involving muscle or tissue manipulation. Afterwards, you can gradually return to your regular activities and workouts within 6-8 weeks, taking into account individual factors. During this period, wearing a soft, supportive bra without an underwire is recommended to minimise discomfort and promote healing.

Risks and Complications

General complications follow those as with any surgical or invasive procedure that carries risk, but include:

  • Bleeding and haematoma (blood clot which may require drainage/evacuation)
  • Infection (which may require antibiotics, extra hospital stay or further surgery)
  • Anaesthetic risks (your anaesthetist will discuss this with you thoroughly)
  • Abnormal scarring (hypertrophic, stretched or keloid scar)

Specific risks and complications may include (but are not limited to):

  • Fluid collection (seroma)
  • Capsular contracture (which may cause pain, discomfort, and breast shape distortion)
  • Altered nipple sensation
  • Implant leakage/rupture
  • Implant rotation/malposition (which may cause discomfort and distort breast shape)
  • Implant loss (from infection or wound breakdown)
  • Bottoming out
  • Double bubble
  • Waterfall/ptosis deformity of the breast over time
  • Rippling (depending on the implant position, the type of implant, and thickness of your skin)

Rarely, breast implants have been associated with anaplastic large-cell lymphoma (ALCL), a rare type of lymphoma. However, implants are still considered safe devices. More information can be found on the Australian Society of Plastic Surgeon’s BIA-ALCL page for more information about this.
